John Russell has become St Patrick’s Athletics’ sixteenth signing in preparation for the new campaign.

The midfielder joins from Sligo Rovers, where he has won consecutive FAI Cups. Russell was an integral part of the Bit o’ Red in the last two seasons, making 54 appearances in the league, scoring 8 goals.

Russell will fit into the attacking style at St Pat’s, according to boss Liam Buckley. Buckley told the St Pats website, “John is a very exciting, attacking player who will fit in with the way we will play this season. He has been excellent for Sligo over the past two seasons and we're delighted to get him on board.”

Russell began his career with Salthill Devon, and has been capped for Ireland at youth level. After taking a short break from the game, Tony Cousins signed him for Galway for the 2007 season, before he signed with Paul Cook and Sligo in 2010.

26 year old Russell had been on the PFAI transfer List, and had been training with St Pat’s.
