Cork City are set to unveil a new signing at Turner’s Cross in the morning, with sources close to the club saying that former captain Dan Murray is about to return.

Murray was placed on the PFAI transfer list last Friday after leaving Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers.

He is expected to sign a one-year rolling contract with the Leesiders and will automatically become club captain, replacing the now departed Greg O'Halloran.

The 29 year-old skippered the Tallaght side to back-to-back titles, while he also played a key role in their historic charge to the Europa League group stages.

Originally from Cambridge, Murray arrived in Cork on loan in 2002 before the move was made permanent. He made over 200 appearances for the club in eight years and captained the team to league glory in 2005 and an FAI Cup title in 2007.

The central defender left the club in 2010 after off-the-field problems saw wages unpaid and the club eventually wound up before being reincarnated under fan ownership. City were promoted back to the top tier after a last gasp win over Shelbourne in the final game of the season back in October.

Murray had still been living in Cork during his spell with the Hoops.
