Longford snap up James and McGill

Longford Town have confirmed the signings of Colm James and David McGill from newly promoted Shelbourne.

Somewhat of a mini exodus has taken place between the two clubs as Karl Bermingham has also made the switch to the Strokestown Road venue. With promotion winning experience on their CV’s, very few would turn away their services.

Not only was “Giller” a key part of Shelbourne’s success last year, he captained the side for the majority of the season, but an injury to his cruciate ligaments picked up against Salthill Devon in July ended his campaign.

The midfielder’s passion and great tackling ability should be a major positive for Tony Cousins’ young side. Having won two promotions with Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne respectively, his addition will be of real benefit, particularly in the run-in.

Probably best remembered for scoring the equalising goal in the 2009 FAI Ford Cup final for Sporting Fingal, James played over twenty five times for Shelbourne last season, scoring once. James is a right back by trade, but can feature, as shown last year, in the centre of midfield. This is James’ second spell under Tony Cousins, having featured in his Galway United side over five years ago.

Experience is the biggest asset with these two signings, as well as some top class ability on the ball. Longford look to continue their squad preparations for the 2012 campaign.
