Southend snap up Flood

Promotion-chasing English League Two side Southend United have today unveiled former Bohemians striker Anto Flood as their third signing of the January transfer window on a short term deal until the end of the season.

Having impressed in a behind-closed-doors trial game Flood, 27, signs for Paul Sturrock’s side as the Shrimpers sit in second place, just a point behind Crawley Town, having suffered an alarming slump in form in recent weeks before picking up seven points from their last three games to reestablish their title credentials.

Flood, who has lined out for seven League of Ireland sides since he began his career with St. Patrick’s Athletic in 2005, also had an unsuccessful spell in Sweden with Orebro SK in 2010 before returning to the Airtricity League under Pat Fenlon at Bohemians, where he scored eight times last term.

Now presented with his first contract in English football, it will be interesting to see if the nomadic hitman, who showed undoubted flashes of real class on Irish soil but was never the most consistent goalscorer at the highest level, can make his mark on the south-east coast.
