York City have confirmed the signing of Matthew Blinkhorn from Sligo Rovers pending the expected international clearance.

Matthew began his career at his hometown club, Blackpool, where he played from 2001 to 2007, making 44 league appearances in that time and scoring five times.

After a loan spell at Morcambe, during which he scored eight times in 12 appearances, he signed for the club permanently in June 2007. He spent two years at the club before being released in May of 2009, and two months later he signed for Paul Cook at Sligo Rovers.

Matthew made his debut for Sligo as a substitute in a 3-0 home defeat against Cork City on 12 July 2009 and scored his first goal for the club two weeks later in a 2-0 win over St Patrick's Athletic at the Showgrounds.

In 2010 Matthew scored the winning goal in the EA Sports Cup final as Sligo beat Monaghan United 1-0, and later that year he played in the club's FAI Cup final defeat against Sporting Fingal. He missed the 2010 Cup final through suspension but did play in the final of 2011, coming on as a 60th minute substitute as Sligo beat Shelbourne after a penalty shootout.

Overall, Blinkhorn has scored 22 times in 72 appearances for Rovers, but following the signings of Danny North and Mark Quigley, first team opportunities may have been limited for Blinkhorn.

Sligo will part company with Blinkhorn, who follows the departures of Richie Ryan, Daryl Horgan and Eoin Doyle, but the club have confirmed a number of signings.
