Former Shamrock Rovers assistant manager Jim Magilton has been appointed as manager of Australian side Melbourne Victory.

Magilton entered the job market when Michael O’Neill’s contract at Shamrock Rovers was not renewed at the end of the 2011 season and he had been linked with jobs at Preston North End and with the Northern Ireland national team, a job that subsequently went to O’Neill.

Former Melbourne boss, Mehmet Durakovic, was sacked earlier this week after a defeat to Central Coast Mariners and the A-League club contacted Magilton the next day, having previously interviewed him when Durakovic was originally appointed.
