Dundalk seal striker signature
Dundalk FC have signed young striker Gary Shanahan from Limerick side Newcastle West. The Limerick native has signed an amateur contract with the club as he is completing an FAI-FAS course but will sign a professional deal in June/July.
Shanahan will train with the newly assembled squad at times in pre-season and will feature in warm-up games, but as part of the deal he must complete his course.
Dundalk manager Sean McCaffrey knows the youngster from trials and hopes to help him to further his education. “I know him through trials over the years. He has played all his life with Newcastle West.He will stay on the FÁS course until the end of June/start of July. Come then, we’ll put him on a professional form. Hopefully, when he gets his FETAC Level 5, we’ll be able to organise something for him in DKIT because he is very interested in pushing on, education wise.''
McCaffrey also spoke about the strikers attributes and that will have a big part to play at Oriel Park. “He’s very skilful and he’s very quick, and he scores goals. He could be a crowd favourite when he settles in at this level. He’s a big part of our plans. He’s a young player with great talent, huge potential and a real future.”
With Marc Griffin and Stephen McDonnell already signed, Shanahan brings the Lilywhites squad to three. The club also hopes to announce two more signings on Sunday evening.
