Devine gets Derry City job

Weeks of speculation have ended with the announcement that Declan Devine is the new manager of Derry City. Paul Hegarty will be his assistant. Devine had been the assistant manager under the departed Stephen Kenny but will now step up to the top job with a two year contract for both himself and Hegarty.

Devine, a local man, has played and coached Derry and there was a sense of buoyancy at the press conference when he was announced as the new boss.

Chairman Philip O’Doherty said “It was his knowledge of the League of Ireland and his commitment to the youth academy that made him stand out from other candidates. We are delighted that Declan has agreed to become our new manager.”

Devine himself added that “It is a great honour to be appointed as manager of my hometown club. I would like to thank the board for giving me this opportunity and would like to thank everyone for their support. I’m delighted to have Paul alongside me and no-one will work harder than us to bring success to the club.”

Devine will have his hands full with five of last year's squad departing but says talks are ongoing with players with  a view to strengthening the squad.
