Roche - We picked the best man
Stephen Kenny was presented to the media in Tallaght Stadium this afternoon as the new manager of Shamrock Rovers. The former Derry City manager has taken the job from the recently departed Michael O’Neill.
Rovers chairman Jonathan Roche was alongside the new manager, and spoke to Extratime about the new arrival at the club.
“We picked the best man for the job, it didn't matter where he came from, and the bonuses are that he came from just down the road and knows this area and knows Dublin quite well. I think Stephen will fit in straight away at the club.”
Roche revealed that Kenny has joined the club on a three-year contract and will continue with one of the best budgets in the league for next season. “It shows our commitment to him, we believe he’s the right man for the job. We probably have one of the best budgets in the league, a very strong budget, but no real difference in it in the last few seasons.”
The club are now planning to develop their own training facilities for the club. “We need to develop off the field as well as on the field. [We hope to] start this year, and build our facilities for the future to train and develop players.” Roche said that the club were “looking at various options” and that they would be “key to success” at the club.
The Rovers Chairman confirmed that Stephen Kenny was the clubs first choice for the job and that they agreed compensation with Derry City as Kenny had one year remaining on his deal.
“We didn't have an interview process. The club knew what we wanted and who we wanted and we went straight after that man.”
