Limerick FC captain Pat Purcell has put pen to paper on a new deal which will see him stay at the club until the end of the season.

Having featured heavily for Limerick last season, it was always going to be a case that if the player wanted to sign, a contract would be there for him. This season will be Purcell’s tenth season with the side.

Pat, known on Shannonside as ‘Superman’, started his career with local Limerick side Fairview Rangers before signing for St Patrick’s Athletic in 2000. Pat didn’t make the first team at Richmond Park and returned to Limerick in September 2001.

Pat was at Limerick City for three seasons, winning the League Cup with the club in 2002, beating Derry City on penalties in the final after the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

In March 2004 Pat signed for Alan Reynolds at Waterford United and spent two seasons with the club before returning to Limerick in January 2006.

Pat has been the Limerick captain since his return in 2006 and his performances were rewarded by being named in the First Division Team of the Year for the 2010 season. In 2011 Pat made 26 league appearances and scored 4 goals. Once again, he featured in the Team of the Year in a season in which he saw his beloved Limerick just miss out on promotion by a single point.

Purcell said: “I am delighted to sign on for another season with Limerick FC and look forward to going one better this year and achieving our goal of promotion to the Premier Division.”

His manager was in a buoyant mood as the signing was announced. Pat Scully said: “Pat Purcell is an integral part of the club on and off the field – for the second season in a row he has made the First Division Team of the Year. I'm delighted he has committed to Limerick for the 2012 season.”
