Galway United have this afternoon confirmed that they have withdrawn their licence application for the 2012 season following the decision on Monday by the Galway United Supporters (GUST) Trust to apply for a licence to play in the 2012 Airtricity League in the name of Galway United Supporters Trust Football Club.

A statement released this afternoon said that they had been left “with no option but to withdraw their application for a licence for the Airtricity League 2012 season”.

At their AGM on Monday night, GUST unanimously agreed to "end its agreement with the directors of Galway United Football Club in relation to its day-to-daymanagement of the club" and seek a licence to enter the league independently of the club.

“Following the extremely late decision by GUST to withdraw from the transitional agreement to run Galway United Football Club” they were left with no other options except to withdraw their licence application, the Galway  United director's statement read.

“The ensuing twelve months will allow the club to assess strategic and infrastructural changes that are required to be made ahead of an application for the 2013 season. A decision will then be taken as to the best route forward for soccer in Galway and discussions will take place with all stakeholders.”
