Michael O’Neill has notified the Shamrock Rovers players that Thursday nights Europa League game against Tottenham Hotspur will be his last in charge of the Hoops.

Former Newcastle United man O’Neill has overseen a hugely successful period since taking over at Tallaght Stadium in December 2008, having finished runners up in his first season in charge and claiming back to back Airtricity League titles as well as the Setanta Sports Cup since.

They also made history as the first ever Irish team to make the group stages of a European Competition in the Europa League.

Speculation has linked O’Neill with numerous jobs in the past few months, with the Ulster man continuously linked with the current Northern Ireland vacancy but insists he has had no contact from the IFA.

With a return to management in the Airtricity League for the 42-year-old unlikely, the Northern Irishman leaves Rovers a completely different club from the one he took over in 2008.

Shamrock Rovers will now be on the look out for a new manager and will hope to have the new man at the helm in time for the 2012 Airtricity League season.
