Ronnie Whelan to attend Harps Award night

Finn Harps have landed a major coup with the confirmation that former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland star Ronnie Whelan will be the special guest at their end of season awards night next Saturday, December 3.

Cash-strapped Harps are hoping that the confirmation of Whelan's attendance at the function will boost the crowd and also sales of their monster draw tickets, the draw for which will be made by the ex midfielder.

The Dubliner signed for Liverpool from Home Farm in 1979 and he would make 362 appearances for Liverpool between '79 and '84. He helped Liverpool to treble glory in 1984, winning the League, League Cup and the European Cup that season. In all, Whelan won six League titles with the Kop as well as two FA cups and three English League Cups.

Whelan recently released his autobiography Walk On: My Life In Red and the RTE pundit's attendance at next weekend's function comes as a big boost to Harps, who have until December 21 to raise the €48,000 needed to keep the club afloat.

Whelan won 53 international caps for Ireland. The last time Ireland qualified for the European Championships, Whelan played all three games, including the 1-0 triumph over England, while his majestic overhead kick goal against the USSR in Hannover is one of the iconic strikes in Irish football history.

“It will give us great pleasure to welcome Ronnie to Donegal," said delighted Finn Harps Chairman Joey O'Leary.

"He was an inspirational figure for both Ireland and Liverpool and everyone is looking forward to hearing his thoughts on both Club and International Football.”

Whelan will help to conduct the club's Monster Draw - the first prize for which is €5,000 cash - and will present the Player and Young Player of the Year awards at the function in the Finn Valley Centre,
Stranorlar.

A restricted number of tickets will be available from the Club Office (074-9130070) from Monday or from Committee Members – price €10 each.
