Cork City Football Club have announced that midfielder Gearóid Morrissey has signed a new two year contract with the club.

The midfielder, who scored five goals in 29 league appearances last season, joined the club in 2010 after a spell with Blackburn Rovers. The 19 year old has been capped at underage level for his country, and has been on standby for the Republic of Ireland Under 21 side on a number of occasions this season.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.net, Morrissey said: “I am very happy to have signed a new contract with the club. I enjoyed the season just gone, and am looking forward to playing on a bigger stage in the Premier Division next season.”

Commenting on the signing, Cork City manager Tommy Dunne said: “I am delighted that Gearóid has signed a new contract with the club. He did well this season and he deserves it. Going into the Premier Division, it is important for the club to keep hold of the talented young players that we have here, and to work with them to progress. I am talking to several players at the moment, and I hope that others will follow Gearóid in committing to the club over the coming days.”
