Clancy gutted at 'outrageous' sending off

Shelbourne midfielder Barry Clancy felt that referee Richie Winter's decision to send him off in the first half of the FAI Cup Final against Sligo Rovers at the Aviva Stadium was an 'outrageous' one. Clancy received a second yellow card for diving in the 36th minute after going down in the penalty area following a challenge from Sligo Rovers John Russell.

“The first yellow card was fair enough. I clipped him going down the wing. I accepted a yellow for that but the second one was outrageous. I got caught and I went down. I thought that he blew for a penalty but when I got up he flashed a red and it was a sending off.”

Shelbourne were leading 1-0 when Clancy was sent off. The Shels number 7 believes that his red card had a major bearing on the match “ I thought that the sending off ruined the game. I thought that if it had been 11 against 11, we would have had a right pop at them. They were obviously going to have more possession. I thought that the lads were immense at the back. They kept their shape and we played very well.”

Clancy could not hide his disappointment in the mixed zone and also revealed that he did not speak to the referee after the match “I can't explain it. I'm just gutted. I'm devastated. I went into the dressing room for a while, trying to come around and then I went back out again to watch the game. I didn't speak to the referee after the game and he didn't approach me. I just ignored the referee and walked past him after the game” concluded Clancy.
