Peamount United set for Paris test
Peamount United must overcome a two goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening if they are to progress to the last 16 of this seasons Womens Champions League. Kick-off 5pm. (4pm Irish time - Live on Eurosport)
A 2-0 home defeat to PSG in Tallagh Stadium last Wednesday leaves that with a difficult ahead of them. Peamount held out until the 72 minutes but the hammer blow arrived in stoppage time as goal number two arrived.
Manager Eileen Gleeson will set her team out to attack from the off. “Can we score two goals in Paris? Quite probably, and we’ll give it a go. We literally have nothing to lose, we’re going to throw everything at it.
“I still feel that the tie is very alive. I think we got caught with silly things like offside, four or five almost in a row, that were good chances for us. I thought we showed great strength and stamina against a professional team. There’s lots of room for improvements and we’ve nothing to lose.”
Gleeson was full of praise for the large crowd that turned up to watch the first leg in Tallaght Stadium. “The supporters were excellent. I think I heard there were over 2000 supporters. That’s phenominal for a womens match, nearly three times than what some of the senior internationals get. So it really is a big thanks to everyone. It really did help the girls on the pitch.”
Peamount United captain Louise Quinn was disappointed with the late concession of a second goal but believes there is still hope. “We knew we should have kept it tight with four minutes to go. We should have been a bit tighter but it’s only half time. We know we can get goals, because we created so many chances. Everyone is still positive.
Speaking ahead of the game from Paris, Quinn admitted that her side would push and look to get goals from the off. “We have always been confident, since before the game last week and again in the build-up to this game,” Quinn said. “We are just going to take it on, we know we have nothing to lose and we are going to really push forward to get the goals."
"We should have scored a few goals last week so hopefully we are going to get them this time. I think everyone in the squad is just relaxed about what we have to do on Wednesday night. We have seen Paris now, had a good look around the city and than got a good session (training) under out belt at the stadium, so we are ready to go. We certainly aren’t as nervous as we were going into last week’s game, which I think can really be a good thing.”
