Wexford Youths -v- Mervue United

Wexford Youths will look to end a run of seven games without a win when they entertain a Mervue Utd side who could do their city rivals, Salthill Devon, a significant favour by taking all three points at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night. (Kick-off is at 8 p.m.)

The home team return from a two week break having had no game last weekend but prior to that they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of league leaders Shelbourne at Tolka Park and have only taken one point from their last five league games. Ironically Mervue also lost out to leaders Shelbourne in their last game last Friday night were late goals in either half at Fahy’s Field ensured another three points moved Shels closer to the title.

Mervue manager Johnny Glynn was not unhappy with his team’s performance last weekend as he felt his side gave the table toppers a good game and could easily have taken something from the game had they taken their chances that came their way “We were disappointed with last week’s result against Shelbourne as we felt we played quite well and had a number of good chances to get something from the game before the concession of the late penalty.

On this weekend’s trip down south Glynn commented “We need to carry that level of performance into this week’s game with Wexford, which will no doubt be another tough game for us. With just six games left we are concentrating on picking up as many points as possible to try and move up into the top half of the table, starting with Friday night’s game”.

Mervue will have to plan without Mike Collins (ankle) and Dan Cunningham who injured his quad in last week’s warm up on his return to the first team action following a broken hand. Glynn will also be without midfielder Noel Varley as he serves a one match suspension for reaching four yellow cards, while striker Jason Molloy is also doubtful with an on-going groin problem having missed the last two league games.

Wexford will be without goalkeeper Packie Holden who also sits this one out serving a one match suspension for reaching four yellow cards as will Darragh Walshe who also serves a one match ban. Injuries also rule out Patsy Malone (back) and Craig Wall who has a broken bone in his foot.

In the meetings so far this season between the two clubs, Mervue hold the upper hand having won both. An exciting 5-3 win back at the beginning of April in Ferrycarrig Park was followed by a convincing 3-0 win at Fahy’s Field in June for Johnny Glynn’s young side.

Amazingly Wexford are still searching for their first points at home this season as they have failed to pick up a single point at home having lost all eleven games at Ferrycarrig so far with all of their ten points having been amassed on the road. Mervue on the other hand will be looking to collect their fifth away win of the campaign and close the gap on the two teams in front of them as they aim for a top half league finish.
