Former Irish and Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan whose new autobiography WALK ON is now on sale will sign copies in Eason O’Connell Street, on Saturday, 10th September 2011 at 11am.
Ronnie Whelan is one of the legends of the game. A mainstay of the iconic Liverpool team of the 1980s, he played more than 350 games for the club, winning six League Championships, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the European Cup. He was also capped 53 times for Ireland. Yet, he has never told his story – until now.
In his frank autobiography, WALK ON, Whelan looks back at the highs and lows of his career with Liverpool, the club he joined in 1979 as a seventeen-year-old, and left 15 years later. He talks about playing alongside teammates such as Alan Hansen, John Barnes, Graeme Souness - who Whelan calls ‘the greatest Liverpool player ever’ - and the mercurial Bruce Grobbelaar, who along with Whelan, formed one of the finest club sides in English football history.
The 1980’s was a magical era for Liverpool but also a time of great tragedy, and Whelan recalls the twin horrors of Heysel and Hillsborough, which devastated the club and its fans.
A regular for the Republic of Ireland team between 1981 and 1995 Whelan talks openly about his difficult relationship with manager Jack Charlton, and the disappointment he felt when injury prevented him playing a full part in Ireland’s first ever World Cup in Italia ’90.
