Fantastic performance - but tough task facing Drogheda
Drogheda United manager Paul Doolin last night hailed his sides European performance as magnificent. As good as it may have been the Louth side face an uphill task in the second leg if they are to progress to the next round. With two away goals Kiev will undoubtedly be the bookmakers heavy favourites.
Doolin said - " We were magnificent tonight, especially in the second half, and I'm delighted with the way we played. The only thing that annoys me is that we lost our home unbeaten record in Europe."
Doolin later admitted that it had been a surprisingly open game, and that in many ways his side were lucky to only concede the two goals - "Yeah, we rode our luck at times and we're under no illusions about how difficult it's going to be out there but we'll be going with the same attitude".
Man of the match Ollie Cahill had a similar take on things - "We rode our luck at times and if we held on for a draw we would have been delighted. But we are disappointed to concede a goal at the end"
While Kiev are undoubtedly a good side, their defence showed enough signs on Wednesday night to suggest that there is a goal or two there for Drogheda next week.
The second leg is on Wednesday August 6th in the Lobanovskiy Stadium in Kiev
