St. Patrick’s Athletic continue their pursuit of the league leaders on Saturday night as they host bottom placed Galway united at Richmond Park. (Kick-Off, 7.30pm)
Pete Mahon’s men have defeated Sean Connor’s side all three times that they have played in the league this season. In their most recent meeting, goals from Danny North and Evan McMillan gave the Saints a much deserved victory over a weaker United side.
And the last time Sean Connor brought his men to Richmond Park they were given a harsh lesson as a two goal lead was turned in to a 5-2 defeat. Galway were two nil up after just minutes thanks to goals from Shane Keogh and Alan Murphy. Daryl Kavanagh and Paul Crowley took the game back to level terms just before half-time. Evan McMillan, Derek Doyle and Danny North all got their names on the score sheet in the second half to round off a comprehensive victory.
On the opening day of the season, the Dublin side started their campaign with a 3-0 win over their Western opponents. Anto Murphy, David McMillan and Derek Pender were the scorers that day with all the goals being scored in the second-half.
Sean Connor’s men have not won since they defeated Bohemians back in March, fully 23 league games ago. While three points would be most welcome for his side, they are chasing Drogheda United who are thirteen points ahead of them with nine games left to play.
Ian Daly will be missing for the Saints but he is their only absentee. Shane McFaul, Danny North and Dave McMillan are all available after training last night. Mahon will also welcome the return of Evan McMillan now that he has completed his exams.
Pete Mahon said that they will approach Galway with caution: “Galway restored some pride in their last match which saw them narrowly lose out to Shamrock Rovers almost two weeks ago. Playing at home we are expected to win, but this expectation has caused us issues already this season, so we will have to approach the game correctly and with the right attitude if we are to get the result we are looking for.”
Sean Connor will be without the suspended Laurence Gaughan and the injured Johnny Keane. Sean Kelly returns after a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Stephen Walsh has also recovered from a knock.
Speaking about the clash, Sean Connor said: "It's difficult, they're at the business end of the table. They had a good win in the Cup and held Bohs to a draw in their last League game. They're a quality team, who are well set up and physical. We've got to be on our game to get anything from the match.”
