Bohemians -v- Shelbourne
The holders Shelbourne will make the short trip to Dalymount Park for a local derby against Bohemians on Tuesday night, with a place in the Leinster Senior Cup final at stake. (Kick off, 7.45pm)
Both sides showed good form in their respective quarter finals, Shels comfortably dispatching Wexford Youths 6-0 at home and Bohs seeing off Shamrock Rovers 2-1 after extra time in a thrilling match at Dalymount. But their results in another cup competition last week, the FAI Cup, were markedly different.
Bohemians came away from Longford Town on Saturday with a 3-1 win, but had to recover from an early Craig Walsh goal for the home side. Goals from Aidan Downes and Killian Brennan, along with an Chris Deans own goal, put the Gypsies through.
For Shels, the FAI Cup fourth round wasn't nearly as happy a hunting ground as it was for Bohs. The Reds were on the wrong end of the biggest shock of this year's competition so far, losing 3-2 to Sheriff YC. Shels went in 2-0 ahead at half-time through goals from Conan Byrne and Lorcan Fitzgerald but threw their lead away in the second half. Two superb goals from Thomas Molloy and another from Thomas Meehan put paid to any ambitions Shels had in this year's FAI Cup.
The two northside rivals are the most successful in the history of the Leinster Senior Cup. Bohs have won the competition 31 times and finished as runners up on 15 occasions, while Shels have been Leinster Senior Cup champions 19 times and runners-up 15 times. For 24 seasons between 1892/93 and 1917/18, no club apart from Bohs and Shels won the competition.
Last season, Shels became the first team to win the revived Leinster Senior Cup, following a ten-year absence, with a 4-0 win over Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds. Bohs were knocked out at the quarter-final stage against Sporting Fingal, after beating Bluebell United in the first round. After Sporting Fingal ceased operations earlier this year, Bohemians were awarded a bye to this year's quarter-final after they were drawn against Fingal. Shels progressed to their quarter-final win over Wexford with a 1-0 first-round win away to Carlow side Crettyard United.
David Cassidy and Ian Ryan return from suspension for Shels, meaning captain David McGill is the only injury absentee. McGill was on the scoresheet against Wexford, as was Conan Byrne, the top scorer in this year's competition with three goals. Bohs defender Kevin Feely celebrates his 19th birthday tomorrow and will hope to emulate his goal-scoring exploits in the quarter-final for Bohs - his goal late into extra time eliminated Rovers. Owen Heary and Glenn Cronin both returned for Bohs against Longford, but an injury to Stephen Traynor means that he should miss this derby. Keith Buckley was a doubt for the Longford match through a nose injury, but came off the bench to play the last five minutes.
