Brennan sets sights on Cup final

Bohemians’ players knew when they were heading to Flancare Park on Saturday night, for their FAI Cup Third Round game with Longford Town, that it could be a potential banana skin for them.

League positions and divisions go out the window when it’s the FAI Cup. Bohs midfielder Killian Brennan was delighted that his side came away with a win after falling behind in the 13th minute. “We started sloppy and Longford got about us a little, we didn’t react to that. I think we were lucky to go in at half-time one all. The class showed in the second half and we kind of kicked on from there. They gave us more than a fair game and I’d say they gave us a big scare. We are glad to get out of here and into the next round,” he told extratime.ie

Brennan was full of praise for First Division side Longford Town who more than matched their opponents, especially in the first half. “A lot of credit has to go to Longford. They are a First Division side and it was a potential banana skin for us. They are a good side and they have some decent players. They scored a good goal and probably came out of the traps better than us. They deserved their 1-0 lead.”

After taking the lead through Craig Walsh the Town failed to add to the goal and Bohs were back in the game nine minutes from the break through Aidan Downes. The midfielder believes that things would’ve been a lot different if the Town had to have taken their chances after the opening goal. “They went one up and shortly after they could’ve went two up. 2-0 up at home for a First Division team and they usually close up shop. We got away with that. I don’t know what happened us; we just seemed to be off the pace a little bit.”

Last season Bohs got to the semi-final of the cup only to be beaten by eventual winners Sligo Rovers. Brennan admitted that himself and the players want to go one better this season. “That’s the aim. We are a club supposed to be in dire straits but to come here and be in the next round is great. Two more games and we’re in an FAI Cup Final. That’s what we’re planning for. Though, we’ll have to start a lot better than we did against Longford if we are to have any chance in the next round.”

Brennan was named man of the match on Saturday night and capped a fine performance off with a goal. Although he enjoys playing with the Phibsborough side he has made it known on several occasions that he still harbours ambitions of playing across water and has not given up on his dream. “I’ve gone on record saying that I want to play at a higher level. I don’t think any player that plays football doesn’t want to play at a higher standard or push themselves. I’ve also gone on record saying that I’m happy playing with Bohs. I’ve been here for the last four years and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Bohs are currently fifth in the Premier Division table and although a title challenge is out for them Brennan hopes they can finish as high up the table as possible and push the top teams. It’s all about ‘belief.’ “We just need to believe in ourselves a little bit more and not worry about what’s going on outside the football club and what people are saying on the terraces. We’ve to concentrate on ourselves because Pat (Fenlon) has assembled one of the strongest side’s in the league on a small budget.”
