Walsh wants Longford to push on

Despite being knocked out of the FAI Cup on Saturday night when they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Bohemians, Longford Town’s Craig Walsh is hoping his side can build on their performance and push on in the league for the remainder of the season.

Walsh opened the scoring for the Town in the 13th minute and although they played well after the goal they failed to add to it, allowing Bohs to get back into the game in the 34th minute. The midfielder had mixed emotions about the game. “It was good to score but obviously losing the game was bad,” he told extratime.ie. “All we can try and do is take positives out of the game and push on for the last nine games of the season and get as many points as we can.”

Like so many times this season the Town’s defensive frailties were exposed on Saturday night. Their lapses in concentration and slack marking were punished by Bohemians. Walsh admitted that they made defensives mistakes at the wrong times. “I thought the first goal that we gave away was a lapse in concentration at the back, we kind of stalled for a minute. The second goal was an own goal, it was terrible to happen and then the third one got a slight deflection. There were some good displays in defence; I thought Graham Dowling had a great game but unfortunately we made mistakes at the wrong times.”

Walsh and his team-mates aren’t going to dwell on, or analyse, this defeat too much; they’ve got a tough league game at home to Mervue Utd next Saturday. The midfielder believes that they can take some positives out of the Bohs game and bring them into next weekend’s clash. “We can take a lot of positives out of the game. We will be up for the Mervue game next week.”

Town currently lie fifth in the table, three points ahead of Waterford. Limerick are in fourth and although there are 12 points between the two sides the 19 year old hopes Town can close the gap on the Shannonsiders. “We hope to stay in fifth place and try and push for fourth, though it’s out of our hands at this stage. We’ve got to enjoy the rest of the season and go and play. Tony has brought in some good players and wants to get things right at the club. We are playing well.”
