Twigg praises quality of Rovers squad

Shamrock Rovers striker Gary Twigg told Extratime.ie that he was in no doubt that it was him and not Dean Kely that scored his side's winning goal in their Airtricity League match against Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Friday night. “Yeah I felt at the time that it was my goal but as I went to celebrate Dean said it was his. As I said I ran away thinking it was my goal. I've not seen the replays but I heard a few people say that it looked like my goal, so I will be claiming it.”

Rovers dominated the first half but only went in level at half time with their opponents. However Twigg insists that his team did not panic.“We weren't frustrated. We were very happy with our performance. Obviously we knew if we kept going in the second half we would get chances again. Obviously it came from a set play. We've lost a couple of goals from set plays in the last couple of games in Europe so it was good to finally score one myself.”

The Hoop's number 9 also felt that Rovers showed plenty of character to bounce back from their midweek defeat against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. “Yeah we showed massive character to get over the disappointment of Tuesday. People may have thought that we could have come and be a wee bit dour but I think that we showed massive character to come back with a 1-0 victory.”

The Scot also praised the quality of the Tallaght club's squad “Obviously we have got a big squad, not just a big squad but also a lot of quality in the squad. People that come in always do as well as anybody. People that come in stake their claim and I think that everybody that came in tonight staked their claim and it's good for the squad”.

Rover were drawn against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League on Friday. Twigg is looking forward to the tie but insists that the league remains the priority “It's obviously a massive draw and we're looking forward to the European game. We've got a massive game in the league next week and after that Europe will take over. Obviously we can't play in Europe if we don't do anything in the league, so we need to concentrate on the league. Once Europe comes around we can focus on that” added the Rovers number 9.
