Clarke confident Sligo can progress

Having produced an excellent draw away to Vorskla Poltava last week, Sligo Rovers go in to the second leg of their Third Round Europa League qualifier with a great chance of making it through to the fourth round.

Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Brendan Clarke spoke to extratime.ie last weekend about the game that awaits the Bit O’Red. Clarke was a key figure for Sligo during the game in Poltava, pulling off a string of fine saves to keep his team in the game.

The former St. Patrick’s Athletic man acknowledged the amount of work put in by the team in the first leg. “I’m really looking forward to the game. Everyone worked their socks off for each other last Thursday in Ukraine to put us in this position so hopefully we can produce a good performance and get a result that'll take us through”.

Clarke, who recently set a new league record for the amount of clean sheets in a row, is aware of the threat of a team such as Vorskla Poltava.

“As a player you want to test yourself against top teams and Vorskla would fall into that category but we've shown last week in what were tough conditions that we can match them all over the park.”

Sligo successfully made the required improvements to The Showgrounds so as the game could be played there and have an increased seated capacity thanks to the changes made.

Sligo will be full of confidence going in to this game and with The Showgrounds sold out for the clash, Brendan is also quietly confident that Sligo can do what it takes to get through to the fourth round: “We created a couple of real goal scoring chances out there, and on another night we would've won 1 or 2-0 so that gives us confidence going into Thursday's game in Sligo.”
