Dunne praises cousin Cousins

Cork City manager Tommy Dunne admitted that he takes no pleasure in getting one over, yet again, on his first cousin and Longford Town boss Tony Cousins.

On Saturday night City defeated the Town 3-1 to regain second spot in the First Division table. Since the two managers took over at their respective clubs Dunne’s side have defeated the Town three times in their five meetings with the other two ending in draws. But Dunne insists there he won’t be bragging and would love to see his cousin succeed at the Town.

“I want the best for Tony. To be truthful he is doing a fantastic job at Longford. He has a small budget to work from but has brought in some great players. Hopefully, please God, if it’s not this year, then next year that they get promoted. I don’t think they are out of it just yet although Tony and some people might disagree with me. They have 10 games left and a lot can change. When we are away from it we are the best of friends but when the game starts we are competing and we want both our clubs to win,” he told `extratime.ie

Games between these two sides have always been tight and with the game evenly poised at the break, 1-1, it was all to play for. But two incidents in the opening 10 minutes of the second half changed the game. Cork City took the lead with a goal that was well offside and then Town defender Gary Cronin was sent off for remonstrating with referee Sean Grant about the incident. Dunne felt sorry for Cronin and the Town. “To be truthful someone from our side said it was offside. From where I was the angle wasn’t right but they did say it was offside. In fairness to Gary he has been a fantastic professional and it’s out of character for him. He felt the decision was unjust and that the goal was offside.”

Daryl Horgan was the main man for City on Saturday night. The player, who is on loan from Sligo Rovers, scored twice and was lively throughout. His boss is delighted with the way he has been performing since he came in. “Daryl is a good player. I tried to sign him at the start of the season. He went to Sligo and for whatever reason he has ended up back with us. He is a good addition to our squad. Overall we are delighted to get the result.”

City now have this week off due to the break before they welcome leaders Shelbourne to Turners Cross on Friday 5th. It’s a huge game for both sides. Dunne said, “It’s only really starting to hot up now. The club wants to get back to the Premier but I know it’s a lot harder than people think it is to get there. We have really tough competition.”
