Jason Byrne has been added into the Airtricity League XI ahead of the Dublin Super Cup this weekend, with Dundalk defender Colin Hawkins dropping out due to injury.

Byrne now joins team mates Simon Madden, Daniel Kearns and Dean Bennett in Damien Richardson’s 23 man squad to face off with Manchester City and Celtic on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Jason Byrne, who was originally ruled out of the competition through injury, has now been drafted back in by the ex-Cork City boss. Speaking at the Airtricity League XI’s first training session at Richmond Park, “Rico” said: “Jason Byrne has come in for the next couple of days to see how his hamstring fares so we’re hoping he’ll be an option for us,” said Richardson, who will also expect to include players from Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers after their UEFA commitments this week.”

While his 23 man squad is now in, Richardson has admitted he still has various options. “Both Shamrock Rovers manager Michael O’Neill and Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook have reiterated that any players they don’t use in Europe this week will be made available to us for the weekend so we’ll monitor that situation.”

Richardson is extremely excited about the prospect of leading his men into battle against the giants of world football and says it’s going to be a good experience. “At the moment we’re working on getting ourselves together so that the lads can all get to know one another and then later in the week we’ll work towards what teams will start the two matches. I will be looking at fielding two different elevens as much as I can at the weekend as I want to be fair to the players and their clubs. The lads have all linked up with the squad and you can sense that there is a plenty of enthusiasm for the tournament and the challenge of the Dublin Super Cup against some real stars of British football. They have meet with Kenny Cunningham and goalkeeping coach Stephen O’Brien and the rest of the backroom staff and we’re confident we’ll give a good account of ourselves this week.”
