McClean gets Northern Irish call up

Derry City star James McClean has been drafted into Nigel Worthington’s 23-man squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifier against Faroe Islands on August 10th in Windsor Park.

The forward has proved his class this year in the Airtricity League Permier Division, scoring seven goals in his nineteen starts. McLean has also captured the attention of various clubs across the Irish Sea seeing the 22 year old linked with Blackpool.

McClean, who usually plays as a winger, is equally adaptable to play in behind the striker and has shown this consistently for his native Derry City this season. The Candystripes sit just two points off leaders Sligo Rovers at the summit of the Airtricity League Premier Division and McClean has been crucial in maintaining their strong position following their promotion from the First Division last year.

This will be the Derry number eleven’s first appearance in the green of his native Northern Ireland and is sure to be a proud moment for both himself and his club, Derry City.
