Ireland U19s progress to semi-finals

The Republic of Ireland have qualified for the last four of the U-19 European Championships in Romania following a goalless draw with the host nation. Paul Doolin’s men made the semi-finals thanks to Greece failing to better their result in the other Group A clash.

The Republic lined out knowing that equalling Greece’s result could well be enough for them, and they set about their task in respectable fashion. In a game that was dominated by the Romanians in the early stages, Ireland never seemed overly threatened, and when news rang through that Tomas Prykril had scored for the Czech Republic, Doolin knew that even if his side had conceded, they would have qualified regardless.

The Irish side, who are captained by John Egan, have exceeded all expectations by booking their place in the semi-finals and will be joined by the Czech Republic in the last four. Much of the credit has to be given to manager Paul Doolin who has a track record in the League of Ireland having managed UCD, Drogheda United and most recently Cork City before being appointed Irish Under 19 boss in 2010. Ireland will now face Spain in the semi finals on Friday.
