Walsh 'over the moon' with winner

The saying goes ‘better late than never’ and that’s exactly how Longford Town midfielder Craig Walsh felt on Saturday night after he scored an 88th minute winner against a dogged Salthill Devon side.

As the clock ticked down it looked like the Town would leave the Galway venue frustrated with just a point but up popped Walsh to give them all three points. He was delighted with the win. “Coming to places like this it’s important to get the win. Salthill set out with a game plan to stop us from trying to play and they did that. At the last minute the ball fell nicely to me. That was it 1-0. It is a great win and we can now push on from this,” he told extratime.ie.

The goal may have been a long time coming for the Town on Saturday but for Walsh to get on the scoresheet for Longford it had been even longer; four months to be exact. He said, “I’m delighted to get the goal. It has been a long time. I think it has been since Athlone (EA Sports Cup) in March. Even to be playing is great but to score is even better. I’m over the moon.”

The driving wind and rain certainly didn’t help but credit to both teams who tried to play football despite the terrible elements. As the game entered its final minutes Salthill were content to sit back and hold out for a draw but the Town’s persistence paid off.

Walsh said, “The weather was pretty bad but Tony (Cousins) told us to keep to the game plan; when we get the ball get it into Don (Cowan) and Aussie (Skelly). Just keep trying to play and do the right things. We kept trying to do that and it paid off; Aussie headed the ball to me and I scored. Overall I’m delighted with the result. We can now push on to Cork and hopefully we can get a result then before the break.”

Speaking of Skelly, the striker was immense during the game and was unlucky to have a goal disallowed three minutes after the break. Walsh was full of praise for his team-mate who was provider for the all-important goal. “He did everything. He worked his nuts off up front for us. He had stitches in his head as well but didn’t wear the bandage he was meant to wear. He really worked his socks off all night. I don’t know what the story was with the goal. The ref said there was pushing but the lads said they didn’t see anything. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve had some decisions against us but we have got on with it,” he added.

After being on a poor run of form the Town have now picked up two wins in their last two games and Walsh hopes they can make it three in a row when second place Cork City come to Flancare Park on Saturday night. “It’s nice to get back to back wins and get it going again. We would like to get the win against Cork. Down there they got their equaliser in the last minute. We are going to enjoy this win and looking forward to training during the week and getting back onto the pitch next week against Cork.”
