Europa 3rd round draw

The Ukraine appears to be the destination of choice for the third qualifying round of the Europa League with two of Ireland’s three representative’s potentially being paired with teams from the former Soviet state.

Sligo Rovers, the only LoI side definitely through to the third round, have been drawn against either Glentoran or Vorskla Poltava but with the Glens losing the first leg of their second round qualifier 2-0 at the Oval it seems unlikely that they will progress.

Named after the river Vorskla that runs through the Ukrainian city of Poltava, the club reached the play-off round of the Europa League in 2009, losing 5-2 on aggregate to Portuguese side Benfica. Sligo will play away in the first leg with their home game fixed for Thursday 4th August.

St Patrick’s Athletic would also face another trip east should they overcome a 2-1 deficit against Karagandy in their second leg tie next Thursday. Pete Mahon’s men have been drawn to play Karpaty Lviv in the third round with the first leg to be played in the Ukraine.

Naming their clubs after geographical features seems to be a Ukrainian habit with Lviv getting their title from the Carpathian mountains. Lviv made it to the Group stages of last season’s competition, knocking out KR Reykjavik, FC Zestafoni and Galatasaray on the way. However, they then lost five of their six group games against Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain, managing only a single draw at home to the French side.

Bohemians have the toughest task in winning through to the third round having lost 2-0 away to Olimija Ljubljana on Thursday night but, if they do make it through, they would face the winners of the tie between Austria Wien and Montenegrin side FK Rudar Pljevlja.

With Wien holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg their progression seems little more than a formality, offering the prospect of Bohemians facing Austrian opposition once again. Pat Fenlon’s men went out to a late winner against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League in 2009.

First leg games will be played on 28th July with the second legs taking place on 4th August.
