Limerick snap up Shaun Maher

Shaun Maher is the latest recruit on Shannonside as the former Galway United and Sporting Fingal defender agreed terms on a deal with Pat Scully’s Limerick FC.

The centre half makes the short trip south to link up with his former Galway team mate Shaun Kelly, who has already put pen to paper on his own deal for the Blues. Both players were made available for free transfer by manager Sean Connor due to financial difficulty.

Limerick supporters have reason to be excited, as he is the latest in a stream of star-studded signings which have included Denis Behan and Joe Gamble in recent weeks. Maher will be available for the match against Athlone Town on Saturday once his registration has been sent.

Maher has already lined out for Bohemians as well as having spells in England with Fulham and Bournemouth, giving him fantastic experience to help Limerick in their race for promotion.

He enjoyed a tremendous season in 2000/01, winning the "Double" of League of Ireland and FAI Cup. He also scored the equalising goal against Aberdeen in a 2-1 win in the UEFA Cup that season.

After playing and scoring in the Champions League qualifiers in the summer of 2001, Maher moved to A.F.C. Bournemouth where he played until 2007. In December 2007, Maher returned home and signed for Drogheda United.

At the start of the 2009 season Shaun signed for Sporting Fingal who won promotion to the Premier Division and the FAI Cup that year. He also played through 2010 for Liam Buckley's men but, when the club folded shortly before the start of the 2011 season, he moved north on trial with Dundalk before signing for Sean Connor at Galway United just days before the season kicked off.
