Jim Magilton becomes a Hoop

Shamrock Rovers boss, Michael O’Neill, has enlisted the services of his former Northern Ireland teammate Jim Magilton to assist him while he considers candidates for the role of his assistant manager.

Rovers have been without a second in charge since Trevor Croly resigned from the post at the end of June citing "a change in his football relationship with the manager" as his reason.

Talking about the appointment, O’Neill said: “I thought Jim's other commitments in Northern Ireland and the UK would prevent him helping me at this crucial stage of the season. I was delighted when he said he would assist me until I find the right candidate for the job on a permanent basis.

“He brings not only a wealth of knowledge and experience of the game at the highest level, but he is someone I trust implicitly, and that was a key factor in my decision.”

Magilton – a former Northern Ireland captain – has managed Ipswich Town and QPR in the English Championship. Shamrock Rovers have stated that O’Neill will continue to consider candidates for assistant manager at the club.

Shamrock Rovers will play Estonian side FC Flora Tallinn in the UEFA Champions League second round qualifiers on Tuesday in Tallaght Stadium.
