Sligo await UEFA inspection of ground

Sligo Rovers face an anxious wait as UEFA has decided to send a delegate to Sligo next week to assess the Showgrounds’ facilities at first hand. A final decision will then be made regarding the holding of the home leg of the Europa League third round game.

A number of ground improvements need to be made in order to host the game in the Showgrounds. In their submission to UEFA, Sligo outlined their plans to install over 1,000 additional seats, extend the pitch and to improve their media, conference and other facilities so that they adhere to UEFA standards for a third round tie.

The Bit o’ Red chairman Michael Toolan says the club are optimistic they will be able to hold the game in Sligo but that a fast decision is needed: “I believe we have made a thorough, well costed submission to UEFA and now we await the decision. The timescale for carrying out the programme of works is very limited, with the draw on 15 July and the first game two weeks after that. We will be impressing on the UEFA delegate the critical importance of a speedy decision being made on our submission.”

Should their submission be unsuccessful, Sligo fans probably face a trip to the capital with either Tallaght Stadium or the RDS being the most likely venue.
