Behan & Gamble sign for Limerick

Denis Behan and Joe Gamble have put pen to paper in agreeing terms with Limerick FC. Both return from a spell at Hartlepool United in England, and both seem rather excited about the progress the Shannonsiders are making as a club in general.

Behan, who is 27, has enjoyed spells in England with Brentford and most recently Hartlepool, as well as starring for Cork City since 2002, winning a Premier Division title in 2005. Behan, who will wear the number 17 shirt for his new side, is optimistic about his future with Limerick. Speaking to ExtraTime.ie, Behan said: “Growing up in Limerick, you always want to represent your own, I did with GAA for years as well as playing a few friendlies for Limerick senior soccer sides when I came back from Brentford. Playing for Limerick is exactly what you want; representing your county. You had to go to Cork or Dublin before for soccer, because Limerick wasn’t in the strongest of positions, unlike the way it is now. The club really are so impressive and they know what they want to do.”

Sitting comfortably on their seats, while CEO Pat O’Sullivan excellently described the plans for the future, Behan and Gamble could only be impressed by the recent changes in Limerick Football Club; such as the structures and the schemes associated with the club.

Joe Gamble himself seemed delighted with the way things went, and admitted he was surprised by the level of professionalism the club possessed given its troubled past. The new Limerick number 16 was pleasantly upbeat. “I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much from Limerick at all, but the more and more I listened to them, the more I was impressed by them. They’re very focused on what they’re trying to achieve and I’ve said it before in interviews, the only way forward for a club is by getting the structures right; which they’re doing very well. Pat O’Sullivan is a great man and I’m full of admiration for him.”

Clearly ecstatic, was Blues manager Pat Scully. He said: “They’re top, top players and we went into the window looking to see if we could step up a level. This is a massive statement, a show of intent. I think they could play in any team in the country, including Shamrock Rovers.”

Limerick unveiled both signings in an extensive media conference in Thomond Park, going into detail on club structure, club schemes, plans for the new stadium and hopes for the future. We were there for every spoken word, as well as getting one on one interviews with Joe and Denis. Stay tuned to ExtraTime during the coming week to hear more about somewhat of a glory day in the club’s recent history as well as in depth discussions with Behan and Gamble regarding Limerick, Cork City, Tommy Dunne and the remainder of the season.
