Cousins laments Longford injury list

In recent games Longford Town haven’t got the rub of the green when it comes to results and that trend continued on Saturday night when they lost 2-1 to Limerick.

The result was tough on the Town who over the course of the game played some nice football and deserved to come away with something. Manager Tony Cousins was disappointed with the result and the goals his side conceded. “The two goals we gave away were horrific from our point of view,” he told extratime.ie. “When you are at home, no matter how well you play, you can’t legislate for that. The injuries we are carrying at the moment and to then concede two goals like we did, it makes it very difficult.”

Longford were dealt a blow at half-time on Saturday when striker Don Cowan had to retire with a recurrence of a groin injury. It seems that once Cousins gets one player back from injury another one replaces him on the treatment table. Their small squad has been stretched to the limit recently. “We are digging deep down our squad with young lads who have hardly played many games and we are still being very competitive. Losing two strikers; we can’t carry that. It’s very difficult. We just don’t have the strength and depth to deal with that. At the moment we’re going week to week patching people up. We haven’t a big squad so we’ve had to play them,” said the Town boss.

Losing Cowan was a massive blow for the Town especially when his strike partner Austin Skelly was also out injured with groin trouble too. “When you are missing the likes of Aussie we haven’t got the strength or experience to replace him. Young Dan (O’Reilly) did great in the second half but he’s only young and inexperienced. We are relying on him to get goals against a top four side,” admitted Cousins.

The Longford boss won’t let his players dwell too much on the loss. They have to now look ahead, not look back. “We just have to keep going and keep our heads up. We are trying to do something here. The one thing is that I’m looking at getting this club playing football and we are doing that. We need to try and strengthen the squad a little bit in July.”

Although Cowan is now out injured Cousins has been boosted with the return to training of Cathal Brady, Jack Morley and Graham Dowling. He’s hopeful they can get back to winning ways and keep the pressure on 4th place Limerick. “We need to kick on. We’ve given so much so far this season and to be up there is great. But you look at games that we’ve had and we should be still closer to the ones ahead of us. We have to look at it over the next few weeks and see if we can close the gap. It’s all we can do,” said Cousins.
