City to assist in youth development
Cork City have confirmed that they will not enter teams into the Cork Youth Leagues from next September onwards, instead working together with Cork YL to form an U17 development squad.
Both of City’s U17 and U18 sides won their respective leagues this year, an all too regular occurrence, and it meant many local clubs were becoming disillusioned with the set-up.
City had been attracting the best talent in Cork and other sides were disappointed when losing some of their best players.
A club statement read:
“Cork City FC will provide assistance to the development of the Cork Youth Leagues representative side and promote the activities of the Cork Youth Leagues throughout the period of the agreement.
“During this time Cork City FC will not enter teams in the Cork Youth Leagues competitions but will assemble an Under 17 Development Squad for training camps, in order to assist with the players’ development and identify potential future Cork City FC players.
“This agreement is key to supporting the club’s underage programme as it prepares for the inaugural Under 19 National League which will commence in August 2011.”
