Cross channel interest in Mons Brennan

Monaghan United boss Roddy Collins has resigned himself to losing promising midfielder Ryan Brennan with a host of clubs from England and Scotland keen to get the Drogheda man’s signature.

After a slow start to the season, the 19 year old has become a regular in the Monaghan side and has played no small part in the club’s rise to joint second in the Airtricity First Division. Brennan has already scored four goals this term and has cemented a regular place in Collins’ team which has only lost once this year.

The manager is fully convinced Brennan has what it takes to make it abroad. Speaking to Extratime he said: “He is unbelievable. I don’t see one weakness in his game. It’s a big statement and a bold statement but I don’t see one weakness in his game. This kid, in my opinion, can go all the way.

“He’s very level headed. That’s why I recommended him. He’s the sort of guy that you wouldn’t have a worry about him losing his concentration because of this stuff (speculation about his move)”

While Scottish side Hibernian are known to be interested in the player, there are also a number of clubs in England believed to be following the player. However Collins refused to name names.

“He’s going to go over to train at a couple of clubs. I spoke to my friends across the water so he’s definitely going to a couple of clubs on pre-season and see what happens from there. Hibs are one of them for sure.”

The manager went to say that the most likely destination for the talented midfielder would be either the championship, premier league, or with one of the top four clubs in the Scottish Premier League.

Despite the interest in the player, Monaghan will not receive any money for Brennan’s transfer as he is still only an amateur with the club. However Collins insists he isn’t concerned by this and states it was never about cashing in on a player with a bright future ahead.

“It’s not a money thing I’m doing it for. It’s just I’ve seen so much talent there it would be an absolute crime if the kid didn’t get the opportunity to develop at a higher level.”

Collins also revealed that if a deal is reached with a club over the player, Brennan will remain with the Gortakeegan club until the end of the 2011 Airtricity season.
