Fenlon praises ten man Bohemians

Pat Fenlon was full of praise for his men after they drew 0-0 with Sligo Rovers on Friday night. Tempers were high early on in the first half with two players being sent off in the first 21 minutes along with several yellow cards handed out throughout the game.

The game was played during treacherous rain and these slippery conditions may have been a factor in so many of the tackles that took place. The Bohs manager was happy with the way his team started the game: "We started the game very well, obviously the sending off changed things and we changed the shape of the team. The conditions helped a bit. A lot of cards were for silly fouls, there was nothing malicious in the tackles and nobody got badly hurt.”

Inconsistency of referees is a much discussed topic and when asked about the number of cards shown by referee Damien Hancock, Fenlon responded with: “The big problem is if everybody is going to ref a game like that, it will be different next week.”

“I think they were honest sending-offs. It changes week in week out. A lot of pressure was put on the referee tonight.”

Youngster Danny Joyce was sent off in the fourth minute for a reckless two-footed challenge on Richie Ryan. Bohemians were forced in to a change of tactics but kept Sligo Rovers at bay before they too had a man sent off.

With one player less on the pitch, the likes of Anto Flood and Stephen Traynor were given more space to do their thing: “I thought we played better with ten men in fairness. The sending off changed the game”.

He was quick to praise the work applied by his men and in particular Anthony Flood: “I can’t fault the players for the effort they put in, we had a chance at the end to get a goal. Anto Flood has been great, he worked his socks off and did well.”
