Russell in reflective mood after win
UCD manager Martin Russell was in reflective mood talking to Extratime.ie following his side's 2-1 win against
intermediate side Cherry Orchard in the 3rd round of the Ford FAI Cup at the Belfield Bowl on
Friday night.“It was close. They had chances. It did go right to the wire. They could have scored
late on to nick a draw. We are reflective. When we lose we don't get too despondent and when we
win we don't get too carried away. We are into the next round but we know that we have to keep
pushing and keep on improving.”
While Russell and his team were unhappy with the amount of chances that his side gave up to Cherry Orchard, he also had some praise for the Ballyfermot club.“We are disappointed with some of the chances we allowed them to have through bad defending and so forth. Credit to Cherry Orchard they came and gave it a right go tonight and they can take a lot of credit after having won the rounds before.”
UCD did create a number of opportunities themselves and the Student's manager admitted there could have been many more goals had more chances been taken.“Yeah it would have been a high scoring game if both teams had took all their chances. Both teams had lots of chances.”
On a positive note for the light blues Russell believes that win may give them some momentum for their upcoming league matches. Their next Premier Division match is at home to Shamrock Rovers next Friday night.“Obviously it's always nice to win games. We hope it will give us some momentum for the coming league games. We have won but we know we have a lot of work to do and things to improve on” added the UCD boss.
