Skelly pleased with three points bagged

It was a long time coming but after six games and over two seasons, Longford Town finally beat Wexford Youths in a league game at Flancare Park. The win can be attributed in no small way to the contribution of striker Austin Skelly who turned from scorer to provider in Thursday night’s 2-1 win.

Speaking to extratime.ie after the game Skelly was delighted to get on the scoresheet but for him the main thing was getting the three points. “I felt good out there, I wouldn’t say I was absolutely great but I got that goal and was happy with that. Overall I’m happy that we got the three points. I felt lively from the start. We had chances and I should’ve put one away. Standing here now I realise that I could’ve had two goals. At the end of the day I got a goal, that’s what I wanted,” he said.

Town manager Tony Cousins had made his players aware before the game of the dreadful home record they had against Youths. Skelly knew they would be formidable opponents and a good start was what the Town needed. “Tony said it before the game that their manager would be in the dressing room before the game and that’d be the thing that they’ll hang onto is that we haven’t beaten them up here. We had to lift our game from the start. We dominated it but still didn’t play the way we usually do. That’s in the past now. In our dressing room we think we can beat anybody. We should’ve got a result against Shels last week and we were disappointed but you have to move on.”

The disappointment of losing to Shelbourne in their previous game was something that spurred the Town on against Youths. Town should’ve got something out of their trip to Tolka Park and the players used that feeling of hurt to help them get that long-awaited win over Youths. Skelly said, “It was great to have a game. After the defeat in Tolka we were gutted. Talking for myself I just wanted a game straight away. I’m glad we got the win against Wexford. It’s another three points for us.”

Throughout the game Skelly was enthusiastic and eager and deservedly earned the plaudits for a terrific display. Unfortunately for the Town and the striker himself, he pulled up during the second half with a groin injury. He’s hoping it’s nothing too serious but knows there are players that can come in and do a job, if needed. “I felt a little twinge and the minute that happened I stopped and didn’t do any more damage to it. It’s not looking good at the moment but I’ll keep icing it. At the end of the day if I’m not playing there’s other lads that can come in and do the job,” said the striker.
