Important to bounce back - Hawkins
After his side’s 2-0 win over UCD last Friday, Dundalk defender Colin Hawkins felt it was important that his team bounced back with the victory following their Setanta Cup Final defeat.
“Yeah, delighted, it's another away victory for us and a vital three points. It was important to bounce back after last Saturday's defeat in the cup final. We're delighted with a clean sheet and three points. You couldn't ask for more.”
Hawkins didn't have a clear view of Mark Griffin's 42nd minute header which looked over the line but revealed that even UCD goalkeeper Ger Barron admitted that it was a goal.“I personally didn't have a good view but Mark himself said it was a goal and so did the UCD keeper in fairness that it was across the line. It would have been brilliant for Mark to get a hat-trick on his debut but I'm sure he's more than happy with the two goals. He started in place of Jason (Byrne) and played really well.”
Hawkins also believes that this incident increases the argument for bringing goal line technology into the sport. “Absolutely I don't see why not. There have been so many cases of it and some really high profile ones. Even out here tonight that was a vital three points for us that could have gone against us.”
“They had a great chance in the second half where I missed the header and their player got through and should have scored really. You'd be looking at them being 1-0 up whereas we should have been 1-0 up. These are massive decisions and goal line technology would rule that out in a couple of seconds. I assume it will happen eventually, it has to happen.”
The big centre half also revealed that his side will be aiming to challenge for a European place at least while welcoming the competition for places within the squad “We're definatley looking for a European place this season. It won't be easy. There's a group of us there including ourselves, Bohs, Derry and St.Pats.”
“Our aim is to climb the table. You see the difference to the team that the likes of Greg Bolger and Shane Gutherie make, lads that we have been missing in the last six to eight weeks. They were massive losses. It's god to have competition for places. We need lads chomping at the bit to play. It can only be good for us” added Hawkins.
