Shaughnessy lands 2 year deal with Aberdeen

It has been a week to remember for Republic of Ireland U19 International Joe Shaughnessy, not only has he signed a two year deal with Scottish side Aberdeen F.C, but he has also made an impressive full debut for the Don's on the last day of the season in a 3-1 victory over Hibernian.


The former Mervue United and Salthill Devon junior, Shaughnessy has impressed Craig Brown enough to warrant the contract, with the central defender blossoming at Pittodrie. Speaking to RedWeb, the official website of Aberdeen Football Club, the Galway native is thrilled with the announcement.


“I got told around Christmas time that I was probably going to get a deal but it was not until the last few weeks that we got everything organised. I feel like I have done well in the two years since I’ve been here and that I’ve improved each season but I was still not expecting anything, so it was fantastic and a great relief to get offered a deal.


“It’s great to be offered another two years especially in the current climate. It’s been a tough time this season when you see so many of your young team mates leaving the club, so I do feel honoured that I was offered a deal.


“I did a lot better in my first year than I expected. I came over just expecting to slowly make my way into the 19s side but by the end of the year I was on the bench for the first team. I have carried my form on this season so I am quite happy with the way I have done.”


There is a growing need for defenders to show versatility, especially when it comes to set piece’s at the other end of the pitch. Whilst defending is his priority, Shaughnessy also boasts a decent level of scoring over the past two campaigns.


“I have scored 10 goals over the two seasons as well, most of them headers! That is not bad for a centre back. We had a good season at U19 level. I think we only lost five games all season and we put in very good performances against Celtic and Rangers, matching them in all the games.”


It just keeps getting better for the young man with an upcoming trip with the International U19 squad looming, to take part in the UEFA Elite Stage Qualifiers. Before his move across the water, Shaughnessy had not pulled on an Ireland jersey, although it didn’t take long for the management set up to bring him in to the U18 squad last year.


“I did not play for Ireland at all before I came over here. I started to get noticed about a year ago so I must be doing something right. I forced my way in to the U18 squad and this year I have been involved in the U19s. That is quite a big thing to get involved in and to get picked for. These will be the first competitive games I have played in for my country so that is another step up and good experience for me.”


A Manchester United fan, Shaughnessy hopes to build a career similar to his hero, Roy Keane. And following his encouraging debut, a promising career lies ahead of the youngster.


"He was the ultimate professional. If I have a career as half as good as him, I will be happy. My aim over the next two years is to try and break in to the first team. I’m also keen to progress to the Ireland U21 level.“
