Cook pleased with Sligo's performance
Following his side’s convincing 3-0 win over Drogheda United in Hunky Dorys Park, Sligo boss Paul Cook caught up with Aidan Farrelly of Extratime.ie to give his thoughts on his team’s performance. Eoin Doyle managed an impressive brace, as the travelling Sligo fans watched their side run out comfortable winners over the side stuck to the bottom of the table.
“We played well, really well. It was a good performance. We scored a couple of goals and it ends up a convincing win, so it’s really pleasing.”
Eoin Kelly is on a fruitful run of goals, netting twice against Drogheda to bring his personal tally to five in just two matches. But for Cook, the manner in which his entire squad performs is more important than one individual.
“You have to have a good team performance. You will need someone to put the ball in the net, but you also need people to defend and create chances. Eoin is getting all the plaudits at the minute and rightly so.”
The Bit O’ Red appear to have settled in to a grove following some inconsistent performances during the early stages of the season. Squad depth is an important part of any side’s march to glory, and Cook believes the balance is keenly struck in his side.
“All of our lads done well tonight. John Dillon came on and did really well. We are creating that competition for places and lads are coming on and we are finding our feet a little bit better than early season.
“Last week when we are getting beaten by UCD, and now I’m a good manager. You’re the same manager. Unfortunately for footballers, they are not machines. We have bad nights. What you have to do is make sure you don’t have too many bad nights. And if we keep playing like we did tonight we will alright this season, that’s for sure.
