FAI grant 5 UEFA licences

Five Airtricity League clubs have been granted UEFA Licences to play in the 2011/12 Champions League and Europa League. The independent Club Licensing Committee of the Football Association of Ireland has granted the licenses to Shamrock Rovers (Champions League) along with Bohemians, Sligo Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic (Europa League).
UCD have also received a UEFA License in the event that the Airtricity League receives an extra space for Fair Play. The top three countries in the UEFA Fair Play Ranking list will automatically gain an extra Europa League spot. As of January 2011, Ireland was fourth in the UEFA Fair Play ranking list, behind Norway, England and Sweden.
Shamrock Rovers have a long history in European competition, the first club in Ireland to compete at such a level. Last year, the Hoops reached the historic heights of hosting Juventus in their UEFA Cup 3rd Round qualifying bout, which they lost on an aggregate score of 3-0.
Bohemian’s most recent European outing was a tough night in Wales, following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of The New Saints. The Gypsies travelled across the pond on the back of a 1-0 first leg win, before their dreams of progressing were dashed at the hands of the Welsh outfit.
Sligo Rovers lost out in the 2009 Europa League, following a narrow 3-2 defeat by Vllaznia Shkodër of Albania. St. Patrick’s Athletic had an encouraging run in the 2009/10 Europa League, reaching the play-off round before losing out to FC Steaua Bucharest on an aggregate scoreline of 5-1.
