Player passion delights Henderson

Having seen his side lose three league games on the bounce, Stephen Henderson was a happy man again after returning to winning ways against Wexford Youths last Friday.

Henderson admitted that after the game there was a fiery atmosphere as his players let rip at each other but was glad to see the passion the players had for the club.

“It was a test of character here tonight and we don’t normally tell ye what happens in the dressing room after the match but there was a major bust up amongst the players and I’m delighted by that because I’ve been wanting that for the last two months to be honest.”

“It’s ironic really considering that we won the game. I was delighted that they did so because it shows they have passion for the club. There are some strong characters in that room and they stood up and were counted. There were some headlines in the newspapers last week, like `Woeful Waterford' for example was one and the players did not like that and as a result we put it up on the wall of the dressing room before the match, and told them we don't want to see headlines like that again,” admitted Stephen Henderson.

With points to be made up, Henderson insisted his side are slowly but surely coming together. “We started very well and we were very good in the first half. But it’s our passing that’s really letting us down at the moment but we’re working on that. They forced us back in the second half and that’s credit to them but the first half performance is more like us and we’re looking for that type of performance in every game to be honest. We’re getting there.”

“We played a nice bit of ball in the first half and forced them into making mistakes but in the second half, we got a little more sloppy with the passing, however as I said that will come right for us. It’s just great to get a win because losing four games is devastating on everybody and everyone gets on edge.”

With their first win in four games, Henderson hopes his side can kick on and expects a tough challenge from Mervue United this weekend.

“We played very good in the first half, but our passing let us down in the second. I don't want players in a Waterford shirt strolling around the field, not caring but these players do care, and now that we have moved on to ten points we can kick on.”

“Mervue United are next and they had a great result against Monaghan, so we will have to at our best once again for that match. The Wexford team are extremely mobile and when they scored from the penalty they tested our character and we passed that test, which is the most important thing,” concluded the Waterford boss.
