Kenny not dwelling on Derry loss

After seeing his side lose 3-0 to Sligo Rovers, concede two penalties, have three players red-carded and numerous others booked Derry City manager Stephen Kenny was understandably frustrated at the end of the game.

Speaking to members of the press the Dubliner admitted that he had no complaints about the sending's off . He said, “I felt that they were all justified. I can’t really have any complaints. I felt that both with Kevin Deery’s and Emmet Friars’ first yellows they both got the ball. I’ve never managed a team that had three players sent off before, not that it was anything reckless. Two of them were for last men back offences; Emmet Friars and Eddie McCallion. Of course we finished with eight men and conceded two penalties, made life difficult for ourselves in that regard.”

McCallion and Deery were both sent-off and Sligo broke the deadlock from the penalty spot all in the space of five minutes but instead of giving up the fight, the Candystripes boss was delighted with the way his players performed. “I thought when we were 1-0 down with nine against eleven we did really well. We were excellent and started to feel a bit easy because they were really penetrating us or causing us any problems at that stage. The second penalty was a disaster for us because they weren’t really threatening at that stage. That killed the game, 2-0 down and two men down; we were dead on our feet.”

Kenny accepted the defeat and the red cards but what annoyed him is the fact that the three players will all be suspended for Friday night’s game against UCD. He is also missing other key players too who are out injured. “To be honest we can handle the defeat. We are not going to get through the season without losing matches. The frustrating part I suppose was that we have three players miss Friday’s game as well as the ones who were missing today. That leaves us in a quandary. We have to rally around each other and make sure we pull today for Friday’s game,” said the Derry boss.

Derry will want to bounce back from this defeat and their boss revealed he won’t let his players dwell on the game or the events during it. “We have to have a sense of perspective when we are beaten like that. We have to move on. We had to move on after Dalymount the other night and we have to do that now after losing to Sligo because you have no time to dwell on it, we have a match again Friday and Tuesday. We have to make sure we recover well and get back on our feet,” Kenny said.
