Mahon content with victory despite injuries
St. Patrick's Athletic manager Pete Mahon was happy with his side's performance and the 3-0 victory against Drogheda United at Richmond Park on Friday night but was left concerned by the growing injury list at the Inchicore club.
Referring to the victory Mahon declared. “I'm just happy first of all that we've won the game because it's a while since we won here. That was the most chances we created in a game this season. We scored three goals and I thought we could have had two or three more but we played really well. We passed the ball well created plenty of chances and kept a clean sheet. That's what you're looking for.”
The Pats boss was also pleased with the performance of his front two Daryl Kavanagh and Danny North who both scored and linked up very well with each other.“They're two good players. I thought the 3rd goal was a really good team goal. It was a great move with great passing and a good delivery into the box and a great finish.”
Mahon is unhappy with his side's start to the season but is hopeful that Friday night's win will give them some momentum to challenge for a European place at least. “We've played our first round of games now and I think we've underachieved really. We should have more points on the board definitely. Hopefully tonight's win will give us a launching pad to go on and win a few games. Europe is the minimum target. Hopefully this win will give us confidence and hopefully we can carry on here against Galway on Monday night. That won't be easy either. Then we have Bray away. We should be targeting those games if we have any ambitions of qualifying for Europe” revealed Mahon.
There was a downside to the victory for Pats though. Shane McFaul and Ian Bermingham both went off injured and Mahon does not believe either player will be involved against Galway United on Monday night “Well certainly Shane McFaul and Ian Bermingham will be definitely out for Monday. I'm hoping Dave Mulcahy might be able to come back. I took Evan Mc Millan off as a precaution when in fact I should have taken off Ian Bermingham. So I got that one wrong. We will have to assess them but I doubt they will be playing against Galway on Monday” added the Pats manager.
