Dunne satisfied with Cup progression

While everyone knows that promotion is the priority for Cork City, a place in an EA Sports Cup quarter-final is nothing to turn noses up at either and despite Tommy Dunne making several changes to the starting XI last night away to Wexford Youths, the aim was still the same: to win the game.

“I thought we played quite well throughout. Vinny Sullivan had two good opportunities to kill the game off and although we wanted to give a few others a run-out, we still wanted to win.

“We still put out a strong team, a few people got a game, the likes of Stephen Mulcahy, Ian Turner and Timmy Kiely, and we have to be happy with the result. I thought we played a little bit better, the football was very good at times.

“There were some good performances and there was also a clean-sheet for James McCarthy in goal,” Dunne said.

He was also very happy for the match-winner, Mulcahy, who marked his comeback with a well-taken headed goal. The U23 international also lasted the full 90 minutes, and he will undoubtedly be invaluable once he gets another couple of games under his belt.

“In fairness to him, he attacks the ball when he’s in there. That’s exactly what he did for the goal but it was a great delivery too from Gearóid, and Mul was hungry, wanted to get his head on it and got a good goal.”

Dunne wasn’t too pleased with Danny Murphy’s sending off for dissent however, stating that “Danny is an experienced player and I don’t expect him to get involved with situations like that.

“At the end of it, we’re only going to lose out because there’s only going to be one winner. That’s two games in a row now that we’ve had someone sent off, so we need to stop it fairly sharpish.”
