UCD manager Martin Russell was left to rue the missed chances which contributed to his side's 3-1defeat against champions Shamrock Rovers at the Tallaght Stadium on Friday night.

“When you try and play against the champions, you find out that you've got to take the chances and you've got to not concede. There was a time in the first half, when Robbie Creevy had a couple of headers he maybe could have put in.”

Early in the second half, with the game scoreless, the visitors also came close to scoring twice through Dean Marshall and Creevy. Russell recognised the importance of these misses. “The chances in the second half that we missed in particular at 0-0 were crucial. The first goal was going to be big to both sides. They managed to get it. I'm not so sure about the second goal. I thought it might have been offside, but then when we clawed it back to 2-1. You talk about lessons. We conceded straightaway and made it harder for ourselves” revealed Russell.

After recognising the importance of the opening goal the UCD boss also took good points from the game.“There are some positives to come from it. We created chances. We know that we can come to Rovers and create chances. Up to the 1st goal it was all to play for. We were in the game for long spells. We played well in patches. The first goal gives them a vibrancy. The second goal gives them that cushion that is hard to come back from. Fair play to Robbie Benson. Great strike. Hopefully the lads will have learned from this experience and will come back again and look for more improvement the next time that they come here” added Russell.
